Beaver Scouts are young people aged between 6 and 8 years old.
The Beaver Colony is run by the Beaver Scout Leader and usually at least one Assistant Leader plus Section Assistants and where available a Young Leader. All are volunteers who give their time for free and receive special training for their role (including safeguarding and first aid). They are responsible for planning and running a programme of activities.
Beaver meetings are held on Thursday evenings during term-time between 18:15 and 19:30.
Beavers enjoy a great deal of fun and adventure which will lead to the award of badges to wear on their uniform. Participation, rather than meeting set standards, is the key approach, and there are a range of awards that Beaver Scouts can gain to recognise their achievements, both in the section and outside. We design each term’s programme to help the Beavers have a balanced range of activities and work towards achieving a number of the Challenge and Activity Badges. We also have a strong focus on developing key life skills such as taking responsibility for oneself by helping at home, looking after pets and the environment, learning to tie shoelaces, knowing what to do in an emergency and taking care of pets and the environment. Trips away such as sleepovers or camps and visits are usually a part of our exciting programme as well as walks in the local area.
Each Colony has a number of smaller groups called Lodges and each has a Lodge Leader, developing confidence and encouraging the young people to support and help one another. We award points to lodges and individual Beavers for good behaviour, making an effort and joining in. At the end of each term, members of the lodge with the most points gain the lodge badge for their uniform.

Beaver leaders
All of our leaders are trained volunteers, working to make sure Scouting is safe, inclusive and accessible. Some lead the Colony week in and week out. Others visit occasionally to help run a session or drop in to share their skills. No matter how much time you have to spare, find out about volunteering on your own terms.
